One of the earliest and loveliest spring flowering bulbs, Chionodoxa Luciliae (Glory of the Snow). These low-growing bulbous plants bring cheer to the early spring with their masses of heavenly blue and white flowers. Extremely easy going, they will naturalize with ease and may even self-seed to a certain extent.
Plant the bulbs quite close together, only 1-2" (3-5cm) apart or 30-40 per sq foot and 2" (5cm) deep in nearly any situation in lighter soils. Do buy lots as planting densities need to be generous, though they will seed.
Chionodoxa luciliae grows between 5000 and 6500 feet in W. Turkey, not far below the snow line, justifying its name in Greek - Glory of the Snow and is totally hardy. It has a bright blue, star-like flower with a white centre with three to a stem. The leaves are up to 8" (20cm) long and slightly recurved.
When planting, make sure to set the bulb about two to three times as deep as the bulb is wide, so if you have a 1-inch-wide bulb, plant it 2 to 3 inches deep. As quick as glory-of-the-snow are to rise in early spring, their foliage is almost just as quick to fade.
