A very attractive flower

Native to New Zealand, the Forest Cabbage Tree is widely distributed throughout the North Island and the northern half of the South Island. It reaches up to 1000 m (3300 ft.) in montane forests. A rather shrubby species, it produces branching trunks to about 4 m (13 ft.) tall, each topped by a crown of straplike leaves. The flowers are highly fragrant and are produced in great profusion. Seeds need to be stratified, i.e. kept in moist sand in the refrigerator for six weeks before sowing.

Muscari Muscari is a genus of perennial bulbous plants native to Eurasia that produce spikes of dense, most commonly blue, urn-shaped flowers resembling bunches of grapes in the spring. The common name for the genus is grape hyacinth. Muscari Armeniacum Few gardeners realize that muscari, also known as grape hyacinths, are available in a variety of colors and flower styles. This exclusive mix is a harmony of pale blue, sky blue, periwinkle, violet and Prussian blue. The cheery, grape-scented little bells bloom for weeks and will return to flower again every spring. This is an excellent pioneer species for re-establishing woodlands on disused farmland, difficult sites etc. Its fast rate of growth means that it quickly provides sheltered conditions to allow more permanent woodland trees to become established. In addition, bacteria on the roots fix atmospheric nitrogen - whilst this enables the tree to grow well in quite poor soils it also makes some of this nitrogen available to other plants growing nearby. Alder trees also have a heavy leaf canopy and when the leaves fall in the autumn they help to build up the humus content of the soil. Alder seedlings do not compete well in shady woodland conditions and so this species gradually dies out as the other trees become established. The tree has an extensive root system and can be planted to control banks from erosion. A dark dye is obtained from the bark. Browns, through red to orange colours can be obtained from the bark. The wood is soft, weighing 29lb per cubic foot. The tree is too small to be of importance for lumber or fuel.

A dense, upright shrub native to southeastern Australia to about 3 m tall with dull to blue-green leaves (phyllodes) that are widest towards the tip and yellow, powder-puff-like flowers in spring. In cultivation it is easily grown, very robust and a great choice for low maintenance spaces. Seeds should be scarified or immersed in boiling water to break dormancy, then soaked at room temperature for a day.
