These bulbs ship within 2 days of ordering. We do not hold or delay shipments. Our bulbs are new and freshly harvested for each growing season, we do not have bulbs left over from previous seasons. Allium hollandicum, the Persian onion or Dutch garlic, is a species of flowering plant native to Iran and Kyrgyzstan but widely cultivated as an ornamental because of its umbels of attractive purple flowers. The genus Allium contains over 700 species of bulbous or rhizomatous plants. All possess oniony smelling flowers and foliage. Some species are grown for culinary purposes and others for ornamental purposes. Plants typically produce showy flower umbels on naked scapes rising above a clump of linear grass-like leaves. Ornamental alliums generally range in height from 3” to 4-6’ tall. Easily grown in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun, but appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Tolerates a wide range of soils. Performs well in sandy soils. Add sand to clay soils as needed to improve drainage. Bulbs are best planted in fall. Purple Sensation' produces a 4-5 inch ball of vivid violet-purple flowers on 24-30 inch stalks. Bulb rot may occur in overly moist soils. Watch for mildew, rust and leaf spots. Thrips are an occasional problem. Deer and rabbits tend to avoid this plant. Prized for large bouquets, stately gladioli offer an enormous color range, including the most delicate pastels, bold hues and almost unimaginable bicolors. Their sword-like foliage and tall, impressive flower spikes make striking accents in the mixed flower border. For best garden effect, plant in groups of six or more of a single color, or grow dozens of them in a bed reserved for cutting. Gladiolus will grow in any good garden soil but do need full sun and good drainage. Space planting times at two week intervals from ealy spring to late June to ensure a continuation of mid and late summer blooms. Height 36-50" tall. Bulb size 10-12 cm in circumference. Gladioli will winter over in the garden in zones 8-11; elsewhere dig them up in the fall, store indoors for the winter, and replant in the spring.
