Unit price perSnake Gourd (Viper Gourd) (Trichosanthes cucumerina var anguina) This vegetable produces long and curved fruits that appear like snakes hanging on the supports or ground. This subtropical plant grows very fast in warm climates and produces lots of fruits for a long time. It is best to grow this vine plant along the supports for obtaining young straight fuits. Young fruits are harvested and cooked like Luffa. Seed has hard coat and may take a long time to germinate. There are several varieties with different fruit skin and length grown in Asia. An interesting plant for home garden and fresh market.
Snake gourd-King Cobra(Trichosanthes anguina) An unusual gourd with long, white speckled fruits that actually resemble snakes. This bright green, thin-skinned gourd is low in calories and can be cooked in curries or even stuffed with spicy minced meat. It can be used in much the same way that any other delicately flavored vegetable is used: simmered in a coconut milk broth with spices. Widely grown as a vegetable in India and the Orient. Cultivation: Requires a long, warm growing season. Prepare fertile, well drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/early summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. The seed coat is hard and should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours or lightly scarified before sowing. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4' tall. Space mounds 4-6' apart. On each mound plant 1-2 seeds. Row planting: See spacing info in chart. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruit and ease of harvest. Snake gourd flowers during daylight hours. May need hand pollination to set fruit Harvest young tender fruit before it matures to retain its tenderness.

The American Mountain Ash, is a small, deciduous, understory tree (sometimes a shrub) that is native to northeastern North America from Newfoundland to Manitoba south to northern Illinois, northern Michigan and New Jersey plus further south in the Appalachians to Georgia. It typically grows to 15-30’ tall with an open rounded crown. It is noted for its attractive form, white spring flowers, serrate compound-pinnate leaves and bright orange-red fall fruit. Smooth, gray bark becomes scaly with age. Dense flattened clusters (corymbs to 3-6” across) of very small 5-petaled white flowers (each to 1/4” wide) appear in May. Flowers are followed by bright orange-red berries (each to 5/16” diameter) that ripen in late summer and remain on the tree after leaf-drop. Berries are attractive to birds and animals, but too acidic to be eaten fresh off the tree by humans. Berries may be made into jellies. Each odd pinnate leaf (6-10” long) typically has 9-17 sharply serrated, lance shaped, dark green leaflets (2-4” long) with gray-green undersides. Foliage turns yellow in fall. Mountain ashes usually have ash-like leaves, but are members of the rose family, and are not related to true ashes (Fraxinus), which are in the olive family. Best grown in moist, acidic, humusy, well-drained soils in full sun. As the common name suggests, this is a tree of cool mountain climates so it does well in northern regions. Lawn specimen or small shade tree for cool northern climates. Hardy in zones 3-6.
