Punica granatum has been one of the longest cultivated fruit trees in the old world, highly prized for its flavorful fruit. A native of Asia, the name Punica is the old name for the city of Carthage.
This deciduous shrub typically grows to 20 feet tall, is very twiggy, clad with small shiny leaves, held in small groups, giving a slightly 'tufted' look. In spring these emerge a bronzy-green color, and in autumn they turn golden yellow. The scarlet or red-orange flowers have a very conspicuous, red colored calyx and (inferior) ovary, giving them a sort of 'carnation' look. The flower gives was and the ovary enlarges to produce a subglobose fruit 3-5 inches in diameter, becoming a deep wine-red when ripe (hence the color name of 'pomegranate red'). Its unusual interior is composed of sections of seeds covered in a juicy, transleuscent flesh, inbedded in the cream colored walls of the fruit. This structure often spilts open to reveal the ruby-colored seeds, which are the edible portion. These are usually eaten fresh, hand extracted from the surround membrane of the fruit wall. They are also often made into jams or jellies. The cooling, slightly tart juice is ingredient of the drink known as "granadine", with the addition of sugar and water.
The plant is very easy to cultivate and is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. It is quite tolerant of alkaline soils and drought, making it very useful in mediterranean climates.
Pomegranates should be placed in the sunniest, warmest part of the yard or orchard for the best fruit, although they will grow and flower in part shade. The attractive foliage, flowers and fruits of the pomegranate, as well as its smallish size make it a excellent landscaping plant.
Pomegranate Trees make an excellent bonsai and can be set outside during the summer and moved indoors during the winter.

Unit price perAmerican Arborvitae, White cedar, Thuja occidentalis, Tree Seeds (Evergreen) 50
$10.96
Unit price perThuja occidentalis, commonly known as American arborvitae or White Cedar, is a dense, conical to narrow-pyramidal (sometimes maturing to broad-pyramidal), often single-trunked, evergreen tree. It is often used for hedges, screens, and foundation plants. It needs full sun, likes high humidity but can be grown in virtually any soil. It doesn't mind pruning or high pH. This is a slow growing tree that reaches 25 to 40 feet in height and spreads to about 10 to 12 feet wide. It is often found in the wild in low areas, wet forests and swamps and less frequently in some dryish sites. Mature trees may reach 40 to 60 feet tall in the wild over time. Scale-like, aromatic, yellow-green to dark green foliage appears in flattened sprays. Erect seed cones (1/2 inch long) are not particularly showy. Red-brown bark will exfoliate on mature branches and trunks. The common name of arborvitae (tree of life) comes from early French settlers to North America who learned from Native Americans that the tree’s foliage could be used to treat scurvy.

Native to Southwest U.S. and Northern Mexico, Desert Willow is a small, deciduous tree or shrub, often with a leaning, twisting trunk and open, spreading crown, growing 15 to 40 feet. It has narrow, bright green, willow-like leaves and colorful, trumpet shaped flowers. Leaves are both opposite and alternate, 4 to 12 inches long and 1/3 inch wide. The blossom is funnel-shaped, Catalpa-like, 1 to 1 1/2 inches long, spreading at the opening into 5 ruffled, petal-like lobes. Flower colors range from white to purple, often with white or yellow and purple streaks within the throat. The flowers are borne in terminal racemes and continually flowers over a 5 month period. By early autumn, the violet-scented flowers, which appear after summer rains, are replaced by slender, long dangling, seedpods with cottony down, 6 to 10 inches long. Birds will eat the seeds and bees and hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers. During the cold season, Desert Willow will shed its leaves for up to six months. In summer, few trees can rival the beauty of flowering Desert Willow.
